Lido hires top tutors who provides classes in Maths, Science, English and Coding. Students can enroll in one or more courses. Lido earns revenue from tuition fees, so ensuring engagement of students on the platform and in classes was crucial.
We had introduced Mastery points to incentivize self-paced quiz practice in the content library. Despite this, a low quiz completion rate was observed. The goal was to increase student engagement and retention. My task, leading the UX, was to design an ecosystem for regular quiz practice within the content library.
Students were assigned a course-wise goal of earning [XX,XXX] MPs over the semester. This meant completing all lesson quizzes across all chapters in the content library for each course they were enrolled in. A low quiz completion was a result of:
Content library’s nested structure lacked a clear roadmap causing decision fatigue on where to begin.
Reaching [XX,XXX] MPs discouraged quiz attempts and causing goal disengagement.
Self-guided nature of content library led students to procrastinate and devalue future rewards without consequence.
In a discussion with the PM, we identified that prioritizing short-term goals build confidence and momentum toward achieving long-term goals. Our approach was to incorporate three attributes in these short-term goals:
A clearly defined timeframe creates a sense of urgency
Measurable goals ensure students that they are progressing
Defined action items reduce decision making on students’ part
Weekly goals provides continuous motivation and encourages students to practice quizzes regularly with bite-sized goals.
To make the goals easier, we made the target MPs smaller. We changed the big target of [XXX,XXX] MPs into smaller weekly targets of [X,XXX] MPs. Quizzes were shown upfront, to reduce clicks taken to begin practice. We grouped quizzes based on lesson for each course they were enrolled in.
New tab introduced to provide a consolidated view of all subject-wise goals for quicker access.
Clearly defined target showing goal progression
Countdown to induce a sense of urgency to drive immediate action
Immediate access to quickly locate quizzes all collapsed under a button to reduce cognitive load
A timeline of the goals would visually indicate how much time students had for completion. We decided to include the date and the status of the goals to make it informative. But... the Engineering team revealed a constraint!
The idea was to highlight 'Ongoing' week by placing it at the fixed center of the axis, flanked by past and future weeks on either side. Hold on.. future weeks?! Yes. Since, future weeks data couldn’t be shown, I represented them with empty circles to maintain visual balance.
Providing access to previous weekly goals, we thought would prompt students to evaluate their performance. The goal of this page was to bring continued engagement. Students could reattempt the lesson quizzes for better scores.
Launched in February 2022 for premium users, Weekly Goals garnered remarkable responses from the C-suite and the users. My role spanned across design, thorough documentation for hand-off, and engaging stakeholders in ideation workshops. We tested our prototype with 5 Lido students and here are the results.
Participants found weekly goals interface easy to follow
Task success rate for a total of five tasks
Participants could not identify no. of quizzes for a weekly goal
Expect differing opinions with stakeholders in tense discussions about user experience. I learned to step back from my design, maintaining a broader perspective. Stay patient, identify when to assert your ideas, and when to compromise. This allowed me to tackle the most significant problems first.
While your designs seem to hold value, they might not be implemented due to team bandwidth, which is alright. To gain support, share examples of interaction patterns from successful products. Prioritize easily implemention that align well with your context.
