Over the summer, I was trusted to own the design execution & strategy for Nauto Connect mobile app. In an effort to increase adoption, I scoped key features around incentive tools informed by usage data & competitive research — ultimately redesigning Driver Leaderboard.

overview

Nauto is a driver & fleet safety platform that predicts & prevents accidents with AI

The goal of Nauto Connect app is to give drivers insights about their safety performance.

Our challenge was to incentivize the bottom performing drivers to actively improve their safety score. Why was it worth solving — because the bottom performers contributed to 50% of risky driving behaviors. Solving this problem would help fleets reach their safety goals.

My efforts prioritized transforming the existing metric leaderboard into a community focused experience to enable peer recognition as a motivator.

impact

Driving safety through design

I felt both humbled and invigorated by designing experiences that encourage safe driving and save lives – a mission we all rallied towards. Working in a nimble team allowed me to pivot quickly in the product development cycle with significant ownership. Over time, I learned to build cadence by teaming closely with product managers, engineers, and data experts to deliver value in a short span.

Kind words from my team

I’m incredibly grateful to Andrew Kaneshiro, my manger, for allowing the autonomy to focus on the strategic vision of the product and think beyond pixels. This has been one of my most rewarding experience so far.

learningS & growth

Embrace the product mindset

Expanding my responsibilities to include feature scoping, prioritization, authoring PRDs was more stimulating than challenging. It got me thinking deeply about the business impact of these features and strengthened my confidence in pitching designs to internal stakeholders. While estimating resources for launch was initially challenging, my manager’s guidance on setting OKRs helped me qualify success of initiatives I drove. As a result, I gained a 20,000 ft view of direction we were heading while staying accountable of my efforts towards product success.

Principles of human motivation

Building incentive tools required me to dive deep into drivers' core motivations, which revealed distinct driver archetypes with varying preferences. This guided me to apply Yu-kai Chou's Octalysis framework to conceive a feature set that aims to maximize engagement for individual archetypes. I focused on intrinsic motivators - particularly social influence and relatedness. This understanding of behavioral design led to transforming the leaderboard from a simple metric display into a community-focused experience.
